Palm care — red palm weevil

The red palm weevil, Rhynchophorus ferrugineus, is a pest recorded in Kuwait. Its status in the EPPO Global Database is recorded verbatim as “Present, no details” — meaning it is recorded in the country with no published detail about its distribution. That is not the same as common, widespread, or inevitable. This palm appears on EPPO’s own host list for the pest.

Early infestation can be difficult to detect. The weevil feeds inside the trunk, and a palm can look healthy from the outside for a long time. For that reason no single sign should be relied on to confirm an infestation — or to rule one out.

Inspect your palms routinely. If you notice any change — wilting in the newer fronds, holes in the trunk or frond bases, chewed fibre or fluid coming from them, a fermenting smell, or a leaning crown — request a professional assessment from the Public Authority for Agriculture Affairs and Fish Resources (PAAF) or a qualified plant-health specialist. These signs are reasons to seek assessment, not a diagnosis in themselves.
