Choosing and Maintaining an Irrigation System
Choosing and maintaining an irrigation system
Why drip is cited so often where salinity is a factor
FAO states that "if the irrigation water contains dissolved salts, drip irrigation is particularly suitable, as less water is applied to the soil than with surface methods".
It also notes that drip "is suited to irrigating individual plants or trees or row crops such as vegetables and sugarcane" and "is not suitable for close growing crops".
The trade-off: complexity and clogging
FAO is equally direct that "in general, drip and sprinkler irrigation are technically more complicated methods", and that "the sediments may clog the drip or sprinkler irrigation systems".
That last sentence is the crux in Kuwait, because dust is not an exception here: the Al-Sarayat season is characterised by severe dust storms, and summer dust peaks fall in known windows — 9–12 and 17–24 June, and 1–7 and 9–17 July.
Filters: the first point of failure
A blocked emitter makes no sound and lights no indicator — it is usually discovered when the plant it served dies. Checking filters after dust storms is therefore preventive, not remedial.
Sound practice is to inspect the network before summer rather than during it: Dry Summer maxima reach 42–46°C, and a two-day failure at those temperatures may not be recoverable.
What we do not give
We recommend no brand, and give no filter mesh size, emitter flow rate, or emitter spacing. Those are engineering decisions that depend on water source, pressure, soil texture and area, and are settled by a site assessment, not by an information page.
