Managing soil and irrigation-water salinity

Definition before treatment

FAO defines salt-affected soil as "soils in which salts interfere with normal plant growth", divided into saline, saline-sodic and sodic.

The measure and the classes

The accepted measure is the electrical conductivity of the soil saturation extract (ECe). Per FAO a soil is saline once ECe exceeds 4 dS/m at 25°C:

  • Non-saline: 0–2 dS/m
  • Slightly saline: 2–4
  • Moderately saline: 4–8
  • Strongly saline: 8–16
  • Very strongly saline: above 16

Your own figure comes only from laboratory analysis. It cannot be judged by eye, or by tasting the water.

Drainage first — always

Salts are leached below the root zone by water, and that only happens if the water has somewhere to go. Any salinity management therefore begins with drainage, not with a product.

In Kuwait the winter rains — the Meteorological Department describes winter as "clouds and rain" — are a natural leaching opportunity that does not come often, provided drainage is ready beforehand.

Drip irrigation

FAO states that "if the irrigation water contains dissolved salts, drip irrigation is particularly suitable, as less water is applied to the soil than with surface methods".

What we still do not know — stated plainly

Three genuine gaps we do not pretend to cover:

  • Irrigation-water salinity (ECw) — a different measure from ECe with its own thresholds. We have read no source giving them, so we state no figure.
  • Sodic soils — the source we read gives no ESP or pH thresholds for them.
  • Any species' salinity tolerance — needs a source per species, and we have not read one.

We also give no leaching fraction, gypsum quantity or amendment rate per square metre. Those depend on your analysis and the product; their authority is the product label and your soil test, not an information page.
