Protecting plants from heat
Quick answer. Heat damage is not a nutritional problem and does not have a nutritional solution. Shade, mulch to reduce soil temperature, water continuity and — above all — growing each crop in the season that suits it are the levers. Feeding a heat-stressed plant pushes new soft growth into conditions the plant already cannot cope with.
What heat actually does
Several distinct things, and they are worth separating because they are often lumped together as "the plant is struggling".
It drives transpiration above what roots can supply, producing midday wilting that recovers in the evening — a plant doing this may have entirely adequate soil moisture. It triggers bolting in every cool-season crop in this library, ending production regardless of how well fed the plant is. It causes flower and pod drop in beans and peas at exactly the stage FAO ranks as their priority. It suppresses tuber initiation in potato — FAO's first-priority stage for that crop. And it raises soil temperature in a shallow root zone, which is where most of these crops keep their roots.
None of those is a deficiency, and none responds to fertiliser.
The main lever is the calendar
The most effective heat protection is not growing a cool-season crop through the hot season. Lettuce, spinach, rocket, cabbage, cauliflower, broccoli, kale, carrot, radish, beetroot, potato, peas and broad beans are all cool-season crops. Attempting them in Kuwaiti summer means fighting the climate continuously and losing the crop to bolting anyway.
This guide deliberately gives no planting dates. Our sources do not contain validated Kuwaiti sowing calendars, and inventing one would be worse than omitting it. Season choice should be based on local horticultural experience or an agricultural extension source, not on a number we could not verify.
Shade and soil temperature
Shade during the hottest part of the day extends the usable window for crops at their limit. FAO's statement that in very hot climates mulching can reduce water loss from the soil and reduce soil temperature applies directly — soil temperature, not just air temperature, is part of what is damaging shallow roots.
Containers deserve a specific mention: they heat faster than open ground on all sides, and a dark container in direct sun can reach root-damaging temperatures while the air is merely hot. Position, shading the container itself, and lighter colours all matter.
Water continuity
Consistency matters more than volume. Heat plus irregular watering produces the specific defects — splitting in root crops, blossom-end rot in fruiting crops, bitter or pithy texture — that are most often misread as deficiencies.
Do not fertilise a heat-stressed plant. It cannot use the input, the new growth encouraged is soft and more vulnerable than what it already has, and fertiliser salts in a soil drying rapidly under heat raise the concentration around the roots. Wilting at midday with recovery in the evening usually needs shade, not water or feed. A visual symptom alone is not a confirmed diagnosis.
