Transplanting seedlings

Quick answer. Transplant in the cooler part of the day, keep the roots moist and covered throughout, and harden the seedlings off before they go out. Some crops should never be transplanted at all: carrot, radish, coriander and other taproot crops are deformed or set back by root disturbance, and are direct-sown for that reason.

Which crops transplant and which do not

Transplant readily: tomato, peppers, eggplant, cabbage, cauliflower, broccoli, kale, lettuce, and many cucurbits when young and handled carefully.

Direct sow instead: carrot, radish, beetroot and coriander — all taproot or storage-root crops where disturbance shows up permanently in the harvested organ. A forked carrot cannot be repaired later, and the cause was a decision made weeks earlier.

This distinction matters more than any nutritional decision at this stage, because it is not recoverable.

Hardening off

A seedling raised in shelter has soft tissue and is not adapted to full sun, wind or the temperature swing outdoors. Moving it directly into those conditions causes a check, and in Kuwaiti conditions it can kill outright. Gradual exposure over a period before planting lets the plant adjust.

This is the step most often skipped, and skipping it produces a seedling that sits still for weeks. Growers then commonly diagnose the stall as a nutrient shortage and feed it, which does not address the cause.

Timing within the day and season

Late afternoon or evening planting gives the seedling the cooler night hours to recover before it faces full sun. Planting into the middle of a hot day asks a disturbed root system to supply a plant under maximum demand, which is exactly when it is least able to.

After planting

Water in immediately and keep moisture consistent while roots make contact with the surrounding soil. Do not fertilise at transplanting — the roots are damaged and cannot use it, and it risks injuring them. Wait until the plant shows new growth, which is the visible sign that roots have started working.

A seedling that stalls after transplanting is usually not hungry. Transplant shock, insufficient hardening off, heat or a dried root ball explain most cases. Feeding a stalled transplant is the standard response and the usually wrong one. A visual symptom alone is not a confirmed diagnosis.
