Protecting plants from heat, cold, wind and dust

Protection is installed before it is needed

Everything below is built on the climatic periods published by the Kuwait Meteorological Department — meaning the risk dates are known in advance, and there is no excuse for being caught out.

Heat — from 21 May

Summer begins on 21 May and is described as "great increase in humidity and temperature". Dry Summer (6 June – 19 July) reaches 42–46°C; Wet Summer (20 July – 4 November) 45–46°C; the highest recorded is 51.3°C on 20 August 1998.

Practical conclusion: May is the month for installing shade and inspecting the irrigation network. Not July.

Cold — from 6 December

Winter begins 6 December with Murba'ania (maximum 13°C, dropping to 3.3°C). In Mild Winter (16 January – 15 February) temperatures sometimes fall below zero, the lowest recorded being −4°C on 20 January 1964.

Conclusion: December is when protection for cold-sensitive plants goes on. Not January.

Wind

Al-Suhily winds: 15 March – 10 April, with maxima reaching 41°C. Thunderstorms are frequent, averaging 65 km/hour. Hot Semoom winds dominate Dry Summer; winter brings very cold north-westerlies.

Conclusion: staking goes in at planting, not after the first storm.

Dust

The Al-Sarayat season from 9 April is characterised by severe dust storms, and summer peaks fall on 9–12 and 17–24 June, and 1–7 and 9–17 July.

Conclusion: check irrigation filters after every storm — FAO notes that "the sediments may clog the drip or sprinkler irrigation systems".

What we do not give

We state no shade percentage, netting specification or windbreak height. These depend on the plant and the site and are settled by a site assessment.

Weather varies from season to season. Check current forecasts and your own site conditions.
