Monitoring plants for stress, pests and disease

Observation is cheaper than treatment

Most money spent treating garden plants is spent late, and on a problem that was never properly diagnosed. Regular monitoring is the cheapest tool in the garden.

First question: living problem, or environmental condition?

Before thinking about a pest or disease, ask whether water, heat or salinity explains what you are seeing. In Kuwait, summer maxima of 45–46°C and salinity — which FAO defines as salts that "interfere with normal plant growth" — both produce symptoms that resemble infestation.

Spraying a plant that is actually suffering an irrigation fault treats nothing, and adds cost and risk.

What to inspect

  • The undersides of leaves, not only the tops
  • New growth, usually the first affected
  • The stem at soil level
  • The soil at root depth
  • The emitter serving that plant — is it actually running?

When to look more often

After dust storms and during heat-stress periods — not because pests necessarily increase, but because a stressed plant tolerates any additional problem less well, and because storms disrupt irrigation.

Record what you see

A dated phone photograph beats memory. Comparing two photographs a week apart tells you whether a problem is advancing or static — a distinction that matters greatly in diagnosis.

What we do not give — and why

This guide names no pesticide, no active ingredient, no dose, no application rate and makes no toxicity claim. These vary by product, pest and crop, and their authority is the product label and the regulatory guidance in force in the State of Kuwait — not an information page.

Nor do we give a list of pests or diseases "common in Kuwait", because we have read no institutional source documenting them. That is a gap we name rather than fill by guessing.

If you need a diagnosis, an on-site inspection beats a description at a distance.
