Using compost around ornamental trees

Quick answer

Compost around a tree works on the soil, not directly on the tree. Its nutrient content is low and variable, so it is a poor way to correct a shortage — but on arid sandy soil its organic matter addresses the limitation no mineral fertiliser can touch: the soil's ability to hold nutrients at all.

What it contributes

FAO's typical figures are about 0.5% N, 0.2% P₂O₅ and 0.5% K₂O for rural compost and about 1.5%, 1.0% and 1.5% for urban compost — roughly a tenth of a mineral product. And FAO's caveat matters as much: nutrient status depends largely on the nutrient content of the wastes composted, so compost is not a specification.

Its structural contribution is the real case. FAO records that soils rich in organic matter have a higher CEC than soils low in it, and lists low organic matter and low nutrient storage capacity in sandy soils among the defining problems of arid soils. In its date palm manual FAO also credits organic manure with enhancing crumb formation which improves root respiration, increasing infiltration rate and water holding capacity, and limiting the harmful effects of alkalinity while improving the leaching of salts.

Where it goes

  • Across the root zone, as a surface layer worked lightly in at most — not dug through the root plate.
  • Never against the trunk.
  • Not into the planting hole of an ornamental tree as a rich pocket.

In Kuwait's conditions

High temperatures accelerate breakdown, so an application is not permanent and the effect needs maintaining. On a salt-affected site, any material's own salt content should be considered — a soil analysis before and a water analysis alongside are the sensible precaution.

No quantity per square metre is given. FAO's date palm figure of 10–15 kg of matured dry manure mixed into a 1 m³ planting hole is a date palm agricultural figure, quoted for scale rather than as an ornamental-tree rate.

Common mistakes

  • Using compost to correct a visible deficiency.
  • Assuming a batch's content from its description rather than an analysis.
  • Applying material that has not finished decomposing, then reading the resulting yellowing as hunger.
  • Piling it against the trunk.
  • Digging it deeply through an established root plate.

Warning signs

General yellowing shortly after a heavy dressing of coarse material is more likely nitrogen tie-up than a soil shortage: FAO records short-term fixation of nitrogen, phosphorus and sulphur into micro-organisms creating a transient deficiency at wide carbon-to-nutrient ratios. Un-decomposed material against roots can also cause direct damage.
