Feeding containers versus open ground
Quick answer
A container holds a small, finite volume of growing medium with no surrounding soil to buffer it. Nutrients leach out of the bottom with every generous watering, and salts concentrate when watering is sparse. Both problems are more acute than in open ground, and neither is solved by simply feeding more.
What is different about a container
- A small reserve. There is no wider soil volume to draw on, so what is in the pot is all there is.
- Free drainage. Water leaving the base carries dissolved nutrients with it — the same leaching that occurs in sandy soil, concentrated.
- No buffering. Open ground moderates temperature and moisture swings; a container does not.
- Salt accumulation. When water applied is barely enough, salts left behind by evaporation build up with nowhere to go.
- A confined root system. Roots cannot forage beyond the pot, so an error is felt immediately.
The two opposite failure modes
Watering heavily flushes nutrients out of the base. Watering sparingly concentrates salts in the medium. Both are real, and they pull in opposite directions — which is why container feeding is more about consistency and small quantities than about any single correct dose.
The underlying mechanism is the same one FAO describes for sandy soils: low storage capacity for mineral nutrients means what is not taken up promptly is not banked. A container behaves like a very sandy soil with a hard boundary.
In Kuwait's conditions
Heat makes both failure modes worse. With summer maxima of 42–46°C, a container in sun loses water fast, is watered often, and therefore both leaches and accumulates salt more quickly than the same plant in the ground. The medium's temperature also swings far more than soil does.
Where irrigation water carries salts, a container receives that load repeatedly into a small volume with limited leaching. An irrigation-water analysis is therefore at least as relevant for containers as for beds.
General guidance. No watering frequency, feeding interval or rate is given — those depend on the plant, the medium, the pot size and your water.
Common mistakes
- Applying an open-ground rate to a pot by guesswork.
- Feeding a container that has dried out, concentrating salts around the roots.
- Never allowing any drainage through, so salts accumulate season on season.
- Assuming a white crust on the medium surface or pot rim is harmless.
- Repotting as a response to symptoms without checking whether the cause is water, salt or roots.
Boundary
No feeding rate, frequency, dilution or medium recipe is given here. Container feeding rates in particular must come from the product label, since concentration in a small volume is exactly where over-application does harm fastest. Symptoms in containers should be read the same way as anywhere else — position first, then the four look-alikes.
