Fertilising mature ornamental trees

Quick answer

A mature tree occupies a large soil volume and has usually reached equilibrium with it. Routine feeding of a healthy mature tree is rarely justified, and the default should be no unless a symptom and an analysis together point to a specific shortage. When there is a genuine problem, the cause is more often water, salinity, root damage or restricted rooting volume than soil fertility.

Why maturity changes the question

A mature tree's roots explore far more soil than any application can reach economically, and its growth rate has slowed by design. Pushing growth with nitrogen on a mature ornamental is rarely the goal, and FAO records that excess nitrogen prolongs the vegetative period and delays maturity.

Where a mature tree is genuinely declining, the differential is the same as everywhere else: salinity, irrigation, roots, pests and disease all produce symptoms that resemble nutrient shortage, and FAO stresses confirming the cause before corrective measures are taken.

When feeding is justified

  • A soil analysis shows a specific deficiency and the tree shows a matching symptom.
  • The rooting volume is genuinely restricted — a bed, a lawn cut-out, paving.
  • A tissue analysis has identified a micronutrient shortage that soil chemistry explains.

In Kuwait's conditions

On alkaline calcareous soil the most likely genuine finding on a mature tree is a micronutrient availability problem, not a macronutrient shortage — FAO records acute iron deficiency as lime chlorosis occurring frequently, with zinc deficiency frequent and copper deficiency rare. The important consequence is that the answer is usually not more iron in the soil; the iron is present and unavailable.

Salt accumulation is the other mature-tree finding. Where irrigation water carries salts, decades of watering concentrate them, and the symptoms — marginal scorch on older leaves — read as potassium shortage. Only an ECe measurement separates them.

Common mistakes

  • Annual feeding of a healthy mature tree out of habit.
  • Reading marginal scorch as potassium shortage without measuring salinity.
  • Adding iron to the soil for lime chlorosis.
  • Treating decline as a nutrition problem when the roots have been cut by works nearby.
  • Applying to the surface within a paved or compacted area and expecting it to reach roots.

Warning signs

Dieback from the tips downward, a thinning crown, or decline on one side only are structural or root signals rather than nutritional ones and warrant a site assessment. Sudden decline after nearby excavation is root damage until proven otherwise. On a mature specimen, an on-site inspection beats a description at a distance.
