Fig fertilisation by growth stage
Quick answer
Fig is deciduous and well adapted to dry conditions, and the practical risk with it is over-feeding rather than shortage: abundant nitrogen produces leaf at the expense of crop. As with pomegranate, we hold no fig-specific nutritional evidence, and this guide says so.
Evidence limitation — read first
The word 'fig' appears in FAO Bulletin 16 only as part of 'figure'. There is no fig crop data in the sources we have read, and PAAF and KISR provided nothing. No fig rate, threshold or calendar appears in this guide.
What follows is the general fruit-tree framework applied to a deciduous, drought-adapted species. A reviewer wanting species-specific guidance must supply a source.
Crop characteristics and soil
Fig is deciduous, fruits on wood of the current and previous season depending on crop, and tolerates dry conditions well once established. It is not a demanding tree, and treating it as one is the usual error.
Preferred soil: free-draining above all. The general fruit-tree nutrient picture applies — FAO names N, P, K, Zn, Mn and Fe for fruit trees on alkaline calcareous soils.

Kuwait considerations
Heat: 42–46°C and 45–46°C in the two summer periods; fig tolerates heat comparatively well but a heat-stressed tree is still not in a growth phase, and feeding adds salt load.
Winter: as a deciduous species it experiences the Mild Winter period (16 January – 15 February), which sometimes falls below zero.
Salinity: no fig salinity threshold was available. Treat marginal scorch as potentially salt injury and measure ECe before concluding potassium shortage.
Common mistakes
- Feeding a fig like a demanding fruit crop and getting leaf instead of fruit.
- Calendar feeding of a leafless dormant tree.
- Treating splitting as a nutrient problem rather than an irrigation-consistency one.
- Over-watering an established fig that is adapted to dry conditions.
- Adding iron to the soil for interveinal yellowing on alkaline soil.
Container versus open ground
Fig is commonly container-grown and tolerates restricted rooting better than most fruit trees. The container rules still apply: small volume, free drainage, faster leaching and faster salt accumulation, with label rates governing. Consistency of watering during fruit development is what prevents splitting.
