Quick answer

Mulberry is deciduous, vigorous and often planted for shade as much as for fruit. Vigour is the point: it rarely needs encouragement, and over-feeding produces growth that outruns the space and the water available. We hold no mulberry-specific nutritional evidence.

Evidence limitation — read first

FAO Bulletin 16 contains no mulberry data. PAAF was unreachable and KISR publishes no extension guidance. No mulberry rate, threshold or calendar appears in this guide. What follows is the general fruit-tree framework applied to a vigorous deciduous species, and it is labelled as such.

Crop characteristics and soil

Mulberry grows fast, roots widely and is comparatively undemanding. That vigour has a practical consequence in a dry climate: a large canopy means a large water demand, and a tree encouraged to grow beyond what its irrigation can support becomes a liability rather than an asset.

Preferred soil: free-draining; it is tolerant of a range of soils. The general fruit-tree nutrient picture applies — FAO names N, P, K, Zn, Mn and Fe for fruit trees on alkaline calcareous soils.

Kuwait considerations

Heat and water: a large canopy in 45–46°C transpires heavily. The binding constraint on a mulberry here is usually irrigation capacity, not soil fertility — and feeding a tree whose water supply is already stretched makes the mismatch worse.

Wind: thunderstorms average 65 km/hour, and a fast-grown vigorous tree with soft wood is more vulnerable to wind damage than a slower-grown one. That is a reason for restraint with nitrogen, not only an aesthetic preference.

Winter: as a deciduous species it experiences the Mild Winter period, which sometimes falls below zero.

Common mistakes

  • Feeding a tree that is already growing faster than its irrigation supports.
  • Planting into a space far smaller than the mature size, then managing the consequences with pruning and feeding.
  • Calendar feeding of a leafless dormant tree.
  • Pushing soft rapid growth in a windy climate.
  • Adding iron to the soil for interveinal yellowing on alkaline soil.

Container versus open ground

Mulberry is poorly suited to long-term container growing because of its vigour and eventual size: the container restricts rooting volume permanently and volume cannot be replaced with fertiliser. Where it is containerised, the standard container rules apply — fast leaching, fast salt accumulation, label rates governing.
