Using mulch without causing a fertilisation problem
Quick answer
Mulch is a surface layer that conserves water, moderates soil temperature and suppresses weeds. It is not a fertiliser. Organic mulch does add organic matter as it breaks down, but material that has not decomposed can temporarily draw nitrogen out of the soil — so a plant that yellows after a heavy dressing may be showing that, not hunger.
What mulch is for
- Reducing evaporation from the soil surface.
- Moderating soil temperature.
- Suppressing weed growth.
- Protecting the surface from wind.
Those are water and soil-condition benefits. None of them is a nutrient benefit, and none replaces a fertiliser where a nutrient is genuinely short.
The nitrogen tie-up
This is the interaction that causes confusion. FAO records that short-term fixation of nutrients such as nitrogen, phosphorus and sulphur into micro-organisms may create a transient deficiency, particularly at wide ratios of carbon to these elements — that is, with high-carbon material such as coarse woody mulch.
The micro-organisms decomposing that material need nitrogen and take it from the surrounding soil. The effect is temporary, and FAO notes the longer-term fixation into stable humic substances is beneficial through its effect on soil aggregation and structure. But in the short term a general yellowing after mulching has a plausible explanation that is not a soil shortage.
In Kuwait's conditions
The case for mulch here is strong. Summer maxima reach 42–46°C in Dry Summer and 45–46°C in Wet Summer, with 51.3°C recorded on 20 August 1998; wind is routine, with thunderstorms averaging 65 km/hour and severe dust storms in the Al-Sarayat season. Bare soil in those conditions loses water quickly and erodes.
Two cautions. High temperatures speed decomposition, so an organic mulch is consumed faster than in a temperate climate and needs renewing. And on a salt-affected site, mulch reduces evaporation from the surface — which changes how salts move — so it is not a substitute for drainage.

- Using coarse un-decomposed material and reading the resulting yellowing as a soil deficiency.
