Olive is evergreen and adapted to exactly the dry, calcareous, low-organic-matter conditions that trouble most other fruit trees here. That adaptation is the key management fact: it is generally under-demanding, and the common error is treating it like a high-input fruit crop. We hold no olive-specific nutritional evidence.

Evidence limitation — read first

FAO Bulletin 16 contains no mention of olive at all. PAAF was unreachable and KISR publishes no extension guidance. This is a notable gap given how well suited the species is to the region, and it is recorded rather than filled.

No olive rate, threshold, alternate-bearing management or calendar appears in this guide. A reviewer wanting species-specific guidance must supply an olive source — this is the highest-value single source addition anyone could make to this hub.

Crop characteristics and soil

Olive is evergreen, long-lived, deep-rooting once established, and tolerant of calcareous soils and drought. It tends towards alternate bearing — a heavy crop one year followed by a light one — which is a physiological pattern rather than a nutritional fault, and feeding does not straightforwardly override it.

Preferred soil: free-draining, and it is notably at home on calcareous soil where other fruit trees struggle with micronutrient availability.

The general fruit-tree framework applies where evidence is absent: FAO names N, P, K, Zn, Mn and Fe for fruit trees on alkaline calcareous soils.

Kuwait considerations

Olive's tolerance of calcareous soil means the lime-chlorosis problem that dominates citrus is far less prominent here — but tolerance is not immunity, and interveinal yellowing on new growth should still be read as an availability question rather than a soil-iron shortage.

Waterlogging is the condition olive tolerates least. Drainage is settled before planting.

Heat: 42–46°C and 45–46°C. Do not feed a heat-stressed tree.

Salinity: no olive salinity threshold was available in our sources. Measure ECe rather than assuming tolerance.

Common mistakes

  • Treating a drought-adapted, calcareous-tolerant tree as a high-input fruit crop.
  • Trying to feed away alternate bearing.
  • Over-watering, or planting into ground that holds water.
  • Assuming salt tolerance without measuring.
  • Applying a Mediterranean olive programme found online without checking its soil, climate and irrigation assumptions.

Container versus open ground

Olive containerises better than most fruit trees and is commonly grown that way here. The container rules still govern: small volume, free drainage, faster leaching and faster salt accumulation, label rates as the authority. Its drought adaptation does not protect it from salt concentrating in a small volume.
