Quick answer

Palms need the same essential nutrients as any plant, and on alkaline calcareous soil the ones most likely to be limiting are nitrogen, iron, manganese and zinc — availability problems as much as supply problems. Good evidence exists for date palms specifically; far less exists for ornamental palm species, and this guide says so rather than borrowing date palm figures and pretending they transfer.

Fertilisation and Red Palm Weevil — read this first

Fertilisation does not treat, prevent, cure or repel Red Palm Weevil. No nutrient programme protects a palm from infestation, and no fertiliser product should ever be described or purchased as doing so. A well-fed palm is a healthy palm; it is not a protected palm.

Red Palm Weevil is a regulated plant-health matter. Suspected infestation should go to the Public Authority for Agriculture Affairs and Fish Resources (PAAF), not to a fertiliser decision. This Knowledge Centre names no pesticide, active ingredient or dose anywhere, and its structured palm safety notices carry the current regulatory status.

Date palms versus ornamental palms

This distinction runs through every palm guide here. FAO publishes detailed cultivation guidance for date palm (Phoenix dactylifera) as an agricultural crop, including fertiliser rates with defined context. Ornamental palm species grown for amenity — in beds, containers and streetscapes — are a different case: different purpose, different soil volume, different management, and no comparable published rates that we could reach.

Applying a date palm production rate to an ornamental palm in a planter is not a conservative approximation. It is an unsupported extrapolation, and we do not make it.

What is likely to limit a palm here

FAO's account of arid-region soils gives the shortlist: nitrogen is low through low organic matter and its fertilization is almost always necessary; iron and zinc deficiencies are frequent through fixation under alkaline reaction; available manganese decreases as pH and calcareousness rise. Potassium, sulphur, calcium, magnesium, boron and molybdenum are described as rather well supplied.

FAO's date palm manual lists the nutrient elements needed by date palm culture as boron, calcium, chlorine, cobalt, copper, iron, magnesium, manganese, molybdenum, nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, sodium, sulphur and zinc, needed at different rates.

Salt tolerance — a real advantage, with a limit

FAO states that the date palm is more salt tolerant than any other fruit crop: it will survive in soils containing 3% soluble salts, and when this content goes above 6% the date palm will not grow. That tolerance is a property of the date palm and should not be assumed for ornamental palm species.

In Kuwait's conditions

The soil chemistry described above is the local default, so a yellowing palm is more often showing an availability problem than an empty soil. That changes what a correction looks like — and makes a soil and irrigation-water analysis the first step rather than a product.

Evidence limitation: PAAF was unreachable and KISR publishes no extension guidance, so no Kuwait-specific palm rate, timing or threshold appears anywhere in these guides.

Common mistakes

  • Believing a feeding programme offers any protection against Red Palm Weevil.
  • Applying date palm production rates to ornamental palms.
  • Assuming a palm's salt tolerance without knowing the species.
  • Reading frond yellowing as hunger when it is an availability or irrigation problem.
  • Feeding a palm before checking irrigation, drainage and salinity.
