Palm root-zone fertiliser placement

Quick answer

Apply across the root zone, distributed evenly, and never against the trunk or into the crown. Under drip irrigation the root zone concentrates where the water wets the soil, so the wetted pattern is the guide. Two things must never happen on a palm: fertiliser packed against the trunk, and anything washing into the heart of the crown.

Why the crown must stay clear

FAO's date palm manual is explicit that the heart of the plant should never be covered with water. Anything that pools, packs or washes into the growing point of a palm risks the one part the palm cannot replace — a palm has a single apical growing point, and damage there is not recoverable the way a broadleaf tree's branch loss is.

That makes crown hygiene a structural safety matter, not a tidiness preference.

Where the absorbing roots are

Palm roots radiate outward from the base rather than forming a spreading branched framework like a broadleaf tree. The practical consequence is the same, though: absorbing roots are away from the trunk, out in the surrounding soil, and under drip irrigation they concentrate where the emitters wet the ground.

FAO's conditions for optimal nutrition apply directly — nutrients must be available in the root zone, transported in the soil solution to the root surface, and reached by satisfactory root growth. Product outside that zone meets none of them.

Method

  1. Run the irrigation and watch where the water actually wets the soil.
  2. Distribute evenly across that zone, away from the trunk.
  3. Keep the crown completely clear — nothing applied into or washing towards the heart.
  4. Water in, particularly surface nitrogen on alkaline soil.
  5. Follow the label for quantity and frequency.

In Kuwait's conditions

Almost every established planting here is drip-irrigated, so emitter position effectively decides where the palm's roots grow — and therefore where fertiliser belongs. Dust makes that fragile: FAO notes sediments may clog drip or sprinkler systems, and a blocked emitter silently removes part of the root zone it was serving.

Check filters after storms; peaks fall on 9–12 and 17–24 June and 1–7 and 9–17 July, with severe dust in the Al-Sarayat season from 9 April.

Common mistakes

  • Applying in a ring against the trunk.
  • Allowing product or irrigation water to reach the crown.
  • Concentrating the whole quantity in one band.
  • Applying to dry soil without watering in.
  • Ignoring that a drip-irrigated palm's roots follow the emitters.

Safety

Anything accumulating in a palm crown — water, debris or product — is a risk to the single growing point. Keep the crown clear as routine practice.

Fertilisation does not treat or prevent Red Palm Weevil. Crown damage or unusual crown symptoms are a plant-health matter for PAAF.
