Root-zone and drip-line fertiliser placement

The canopy-edge rule, and its limit
The drip line in this sense means the line on the ground beneath the outer edge of the canopy, where rain drips from the branch tips. It is traditionally used as a rough guide to where the active absorbing roots lie, and it answers the placement question far better than the trunk does.
It is a rough practical rule, not a measurement, and it is not stated as such in the FAO sources we have read. More importantly it has a limit that matters locally: under drip irrigation, roots do not necessarily follow the canopy edge but concentrate where the water wets the soil. In a drip-irrigated garden the canopy-edge rule can be actively misleading.
Note the naming collision: drip line as canopy edge is not the drip irrigation line meaning the pipe. Both terms are in common use.
Why the trunk is the worst position
- It sits outside the active absorbing zone, so little is taken up.
- It concentrates salts against the stem base, where bark and shallow roots are most vulnerable.
- Damage there is slow to show and slow to recover.
Method
- Establish where water actually goes. Run the irrigation and observe the wetted pattern.
- Define the zone — the wetted area under drip, or out towards the canopy edge under other irrigation.
- Distribute evenly across that zone rather than in a concentrated band.
- Keep clear of the trunk and of the stem base entirely.
- Water in, especially for surface nitrogen on alkaline soil, which is otherwise lost as ammonia.
- Follow the label for quantity.
In Kuwait's conditions
Almost every established garden here is drip-irrigated, which makes the wetted-pattern rule the operative one rather than the canopy rule. It also means emitter placement effectively decides where roots grow — so moving or adding emitters changes the root zone over time, and fertiliser placement should follow.
Dust is the maintenance constraint: FAO notes sediments may clog drip or sprinkler systems, and a blocked emitter silently removes part of the root zone it was feeding.
Common mistakes
- Applying in a ring at the trunk because it is convenient.
- Using the canopy-edge rule on a drip-irrigated tree whose roots follow the emitters.
- Confusing the canopy drip line with the irrigation drip line.
- Concentrating the whole quantity in one band.
- Applying to a dry surface and not watering in.
