When not to fertilise

Quick answer

Fertiliser corrects one thing: a shortage of an available nutrient. If the problem is anything else — salinity, an irrigation fault, damaged roots, a pest, unavailability through soil chemistry, or simply the wrong expectation — feeding does not help, and in several of those cases it makes matters worse. Consistent watering, sound soil preparation and adequate drainage come first, and fertiliser does not compensate for a shortfall in any of them.

Seven situations to hold back

1. When the soil is salt-affected

Fertiliser is salt. Adding it to a soil already interfering with plant growth through salinity deepens the problem. Measure ECe first.

2. When the plant is short of water, or drowning

A nutrient reaches the root only carried in the soil solution, and FAO lists unimpeded uptake with sufficient oxygen present among the conditions for optimal nutrition. Both under- and over-watering disable that. Fix the irrigation and re-assess.

3. When the roots are damaged

A cut, suffocated or burnt root cannot absorb however rich the soil is. A normal soil analysis alongside a starving plant points here.

4. When the nutrient is present but unavailable

On alkaline calcareous soil, iron deficiency is usually immobilisation, not absence. Adding more iron to the soil repeats the same chemistry.

5. Immediately after a recent application

If symptoms began within days of feeding, the likeliest cause is the feeding. See the guide on fertiliser burn.

6. When the goal is flowering and the plant is growing vigorously

Excess nitrogen prolongs the vegetative period and delays maturity. More feeding produces more leaves, not more flowers. Age, light and pruning are the usual causes of poor flowering.

7. When you do not know what is short

Feeding without a test may add a nutrient already present while leaving the real shortage untreated. Liebig's law of the minimum explains why: growth is limited by whichever nutrient is shortest relative to need, so adding a non-limiting nutrient changes nothing.

In Kuwait's conditions

Heat is the additional case. With Dry Summer maxima of 42–46°C and Wet Summer 45–46°C, a plant in peak summer is managing heat and water stress rather than growing. Feeding a heat-stressed plant adds salt load at the moment it is least able to tolerate it. May is the month for preparation — installing shade and checking the irrigation network — not July.

General arid-region guidance. No Kuwait fertilisation calendar exists in any reachable institutional source, so we give no seasonal schedule.

Common mistakes

  • Treating fertiliser as a general tonic for an unwell plant.
  • Feeding on a fixed calendar regardless of condition or season.
  • Responding to any yellow leaf with a feed.
  • Feeding a newly transplanted plant that has not yet established roots.
  • Feeding during peak heat stress.

Boundary

This guide says when not to feed. It does not tell you when to feed, or how much — that requires a soil and water analysis, a specific plant and growth stage, and the product label as the authority. We found no Kuwait institutional source stating fertiliser timings or rates, and we do not invent one.
